LETTING GO, MOVING ON

'Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence.'   -Sheryl Sandberg

Today 20th June 2016, I'm on leave and deliberately stayed away from school. Actually I have been going back to school on my many days of leave before retirement; albeit following flexi-time.

There are certain things that still require the presence and attention of the principal. However it is only wise to entrust and empower others especially through this period of transition.

We know, that in the absence of a principal, a school can become chaotic or disorderly, it simply means the principal has failed to nurture a stable leadership and teamwork. If the school functions smoothly as usual, it reflects good leadership and teamwork. If the school runs even better when the principal is not around,  it indicates strong leadership and excellent teamwork.  I'm certain the school is in good hands and leaders will rise to the occasion especially when the principal is absent.

Cohesion, coherence and commitment are required to forge a mature team whereby everyone puts their hands together to make things happen in school. Any organization is blessed to have a core team of middle leaders and stafs who are willing to walk the second mile, get things done, make things happen, drive change and become model of  excellence.

Of course, one can better one's organization and others by bettering oneself first in attitude, skills and knowledge. It is healthy to nurture a positive mindset throughout life. Nevertheless one can never be a jack-of-all-trades or know-it-all person but needs inputs from team members with their diverse gifts and talents.

Truly if leadership is basically influence, then to the extent one influences others positively or negatively, to that extent one is exercising good or bad leadership. Moreover he is blessed if he leaves everyone who meets him better than he found them through continous coaching and mentoring. It is my fervent hope that things will get better with the team that I have in SMK Kepong Baru and live up to our schools moto Versus Novus Sublimitas which means Towards New Heights  or Ke Kemuncak Baru.

Till then, Versus Novus Sublimitas and Tien Tien How Tien.
